DUE TO ISSUES RELATED TO THE CORONAVIRUS EPIDEMIC, THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE THIS MAY HAVE CAUSED.

Our guest speaker for the March Great Outdoors Palm Springs Speaker Series will be Curt Black.  On March 10 Kurt will give us a talk on Bats, Man! What GOPS Members Might Want to Know About Bats.

Whether swirling out of inky black caves or sharing our campsites, we don’t usually think about bats. Outdoors, you're probably less than 50 feet from a bat. If that bothers you, even a little, you should attend this talk. We'll briefly visit myths and misconceptions and the fungal holocaust that is White Nose Syndrome. We'll look at the Cuisinart of the bat world - wind turbines. We’ll cover the proper construction and installation of bat houses. Did I say we would talk about bat sex? Oh yes. Yes we will. “As promiscuous as humans…”

Curt Black was an environmental scientist with the EPA. In his free time he talks and walks bats. He is a technical advisor to Bats Northwest and helps with their annual Bat Ambassador trainings. He has also worked with the Washington Bat Working Group and the Northwest Bat Cooperative and the Bat Grid Projects. Curt has chased bats in Africa, Australia and Central and South America. He has a BS in Geology and a BS in Zoology and a Masters in Hydrogeology, all from the University of Texas. He enjoys environmental education where he likes most of all focusing people's attention on the things around us that are usually invisible or under appreciated. Bats fit that category for many. Curt also enjoys nature sound recording, amateur radio, and pretty much the rest of natural history. You will get a science credit just for attending this talk...

GAIN: Thrills, chills, excitement. Possibly an appreciation for an amazing group of misunderstood animals that are doing their best to keep us from getting West Nile Virus and being eaten out of our planet by insects.

All members and non-members are welcome to attend all meetings. There is no charge for this event. Space is limited to 35 persons. Please click on the "Register" button to let us know you plan on attending this meeting.
