San Mateo Peak - Wikipedia

Trip Leader: Doug Cable, e-mail dccable@verizon.net, cell phone 949-922-1452

in the San Mateo Canyon Wilderness in the Cleveland National Forest. It is the highest peak in the San Mateo Canyon Wilderness. Mountain bikes are not allowed in the Wilderness.

This hike will start from the Morgan Trail trailhead on S. Main Divide Rd overlooking Lake Elsinore at 8:30.

The hike is described as moderate to difficult. It starts in a beautiful oak forest and tops at the peak where there are rocks to sit on. The basic hike is 4.7 miles out and back with 961 elevation gain/loss; but I hope to do a loop which will approximately double the mileage. If a party wishes, they can turn around at the peak and retrace their steps.

The trail is narrow and winding with loose rocks, and little cover from the sun, but good views and not crowded. Some of the return loop is on a horse trail.

We may get to see a rattlesnake.

Bring plenty of water, sturdy boots, sunscreen, lunch, a hat. For the ten essentials that hikers need to bring, please click here.

Carpooling is encouraged (for those who have been vaccinated) as the parking area is small, although there is road parking. An adventure pass  or a national park pass is probably required for parking. This is a scouting hike, as the trip leader has not done this trail before.
