First Wild Bird Walk in Big Bear Lake, CA for the Summer Season

Join Chirp Nature Center as we kick off the first free & in-person wild bird-watching event of the 2022 season. Starting from Chirp at 8AM on May 7th, 2022, this free educational wild bird walk will take you through the forest and along Big Bear Lake with stunning lakeshore views. While on this hour and a half walk, be on the lookout for swallows tumbling through the air, lake birds sunbathing just offshore, and jays calling from the trees.

During the walk, Chirp’s Wild Bird Guides will share unique local facts and give tips and tricks to enhance your bird identification skills. (Note that exact bird walk locations are determined immediately before the walk begins based on conditions and group size.) After the walk, return to Chirp for complimentary donuts, coffee, and a special gift. Wild birdwatchers of all levels and ages are welcome, so be sure to register free to secure a spot for this event.

Extend your Birding Expedition with Matthew Schreiner on May 7th

In preparation for the Global Big Day (May 14th, 2022), those interested in extending their wild bird watching beyond the morning can continue birding throughout the day. Join Chirp Bird Guide Matthew to explore Big Bear birding hotspots perfect for maximizing your Global Big Day in Big Bear.

Tips on How to Prepare

  • Wear comfortable attire such as layered clothing, breathable pants/shorts, and walking shoes.
  • Use a bird checklist. Chirp offers a free local Checklist for the Big Bear Valley and can provide printed copies with pens at Walk check-in. Also, consider creating an e-bird checklist.
  • Take a camera or phone with a camera.
  • Bring a pair of optics for a better view.
  • Carry your own water. Refillable water stations are not available during the hike. Weather in the San Bernardino Mountains can vary dramatically. Read more about preparing for Big Bear Lake’s variable weather.
  • Wear Sunglasses or protective eyewear.
  • Use sunblock as UV rays in altitude are stronger.
