Get your passports/pass cards ready. We’re going to Mexico!

Join Great Outdoors Los Angeles as we head to Ensenada to experience the sights and flavors of the city, and the Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico’s wine country.

We will be staying at the Quintos Papagayo hotel, located on the ocean at the marina, with beautiful views and a nice walk along the ocean. The location is far enough away from the city to be quiet, but close enough to quickly head into town for some cuisine, shopping, or entertainment. We’ll have several sea-side bungalows, and some have full kitchens and living room areas where we can all get together to share our experiences, play games, or just hang out.

Some of the things we plan to do:

  • Zip-lining – located about 1 hour south. You get a 2-3 hour adventure with 5 zip lines (including Mexico’s second longest zip line) and 5 skill bridges for about $20 per person (depending on the current exchange rate)
  • Wine tasting – the Valle de Guadalupe is Mexico’s largest wine region, and is home to more than 50 wineries, producing about 90% of Mexico’s wine. The tasting fees vary by winery with some being free to about $8.00 per person, and can vary between 4-7 wines per tasting, and some even offer some cheeses, breads, and dipping sauces, included with the wine tasting. It all depends on the winery. Compared to Napa or Temecula, they’re practically giving away wine tasting. We have already discovered some favorites, and look forward to finding more. You’ll also experience local cheeses, olives, and olive oil.
  • Beer – A couple of wineries also do craft beers. For example, at Cieli winery, you can enjoy a wine tasting and/or beer tasting, on the patio with a splendid view of the valley. Aguamala is highly recommended by the locals, but we haven’t yet been there. Let’s go!
  • The food! – you’ll find that the food is pretty inexpensive while being fresh and full of local flavor. Don’t be afraid to try something new.
  • Shopping – head to downtown Ensenada for some shopping where you’ll find stained glass, clothing, tequila, and many surprises. On the way back home, make sure to check out the Avenida de Artisinal (Hwy 1) south of Rosarito where streetside shops sell talavera and other local pottery.

Because of the nature of this trip, there will be no refunds unless there is a waiting list, and if cancelled by November 3rd, 2019. So, be sure that you’ll be able to go before reserving your spot. We’re limiting this trip to no more than 16 people.

You MUST have a passport or pass card issued by the US State Department, in good standing, and with an expiration date of May 2020 to enter Mexico. A birth certificate or a driver’s license will not allow you back into the United States.  Please verify the status of your passport or passcard before registering.

Mexican car insurance is required by Mexican Federal law. It is highly recommended that you get a policy and have it cover your entire length of stay (issued in 24 hour increments). It’s inexpensive, and it’s the law. You can get a policy online at www.bajabound.com. I’ve shopped around, and have found it to be the least expensive option. To ensure my 2005 Nissan Frontier, it is about $12/day.

Check-In is not until 3:00pm, so plan your trip to arrive around then.

We plan on returning on Sunday, and the border crossing gets longer later in the day. Plan on having breakfast, and leaving soon after. You’ll have plenty of time to shop for pottery if you want, but try to get to the border early. On average, at 2pm, it should take about an hour to cross the border at San Ysidro (Tijuana), but there are no guarantees of course. Alternate crossings are available at Otay Mesa, or further east at Tecate.
