Once the CV Link is completed in the Spring, the bike paths in Palm Springs will transform the riding possibilities for cyclists in the area. This ride will include some of the newer sections of the Link that are still under construction. (Note: The construction supervisor said it’s ok that we ride this, since it’s a weekend ride and there will be no construction taking place.)
We will start at Smoke Tree Village (for directions see meeting location below), head up Sunrise on the sidewalk/bike path, and then turn east on the new Link path along Mesquite. We’ll work our way to the section of the Link that runs along Cimmaron Golf Course and then cross over Vista Chino and continue to the northwest, using the 5-mile section that runs from Vista Chino and goes all the way to Highway 111, north of the Tramway road. Please note: most of this section is paved and rideable. But there are five or 6 short sections where riders may need to dismount and walk their bikes through packed sand. At Highway 111, we’ll turn south and make our way back to Smoke Tree through mostly neighborhood streets. The bike ride will be approximately 20 miles in total.
Caution: Much of this ride will be on the Link and/or neighborhood streets. However, there will be brief sections where we will be riding with traffic, on busier streets. The ride is mostly flat, although there are a couple of short sections that have a slight incline. You should consider yourself a confident street cyclist to complete this ride. Also, be aware that it can be very windy at the north end of Palm Springs.
Meeting Location: Meet at Smoke Tree Village (1775 E. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA at the west parking lot near Sunrise) Map click here
All riders are strongly encouraged to wear helmets, and to inflate their tires to the recommended PSI. You may want to bring a tire pump, spare tube, bicycle tools, water, sunscreen and snacks.

Integratron Sound Bath, Giant Rock and Orchids
This outing has three parts: A sound bath at the Integratron and lunch, a visit to the Giant Rock and a tour of Gubler Orchids. Part 2 & 3 are optional.
Part One - The Integratron Sound Bath and Lunch
Get ready for a unique experience at one of Southern California’s most popular attractions. The 1959 Integratron is a structure designed and erected by ufologist and contactee George Van Tassel. Tassel claimed the Integratron was capable of rejuvenation, anti-gravity and time travel. He built the structure in Landers, California, supposedly following instructions provided by visitors from the planet Venus. Although Van Tassel has been gone for quite a while now, his UFO legacy lives on in his machine and takes the form of sound baths. We will experience one together for deep relaxation, rejuvenation, and introspection.
Great Outdoors Palm Springs has secured an exclusive private group, discounted rate for the Integratron's Sound Bath.
The 60-minute sonic-healing session consists of:
Each person will be lying comfortably on a mat in the deeply resonant, multi-wave sound chamber on the second floor of the Integratron while a licensed technician plays a sequence of quartz crystal singing bowls. Each bowl is tuned to a specific frequency and is keyed to the energy centers or chakras of the body where sound is nutrition for the nervous system. The results vary for each person and have been described variously as waves of peace, heightened awareness, and relaxation of the mind and body.
A couple of restrictions: No pets, No recordings during the sound bath
Lunch follows the sound bath on the Integratron grounds. Please bring your own lunch and make yourself comfortable on the property's chairs, couches and hammocks. Refreshments are available in the gift shop.
Part Two - Giant Rock
After lunch, we'll take an optional 3-mile drive to Giant Rock on unpaved bumpy dirt road surfaces. This 7-story 25,000-ton boulder is the largest free-standing boulder in North America and purported to be the largest in the world. Local Native Americans consider it to be sacred. In the 1930s, a loner named Frank Critzer, inspired by desert tortoises that dig holes in which to cool themselves, dug out a home underneath the rock using dynamite. Critzer perished in a self-detonated dynamite explosion in his underground rooms on July 24, 1942, while being investigated by local police. Van Tassel lived there as well and took control of the landing strip next to it, still visible today. Considerable graffiti covers the rock, but the setting is still impressive. For more information click here
Part Three - Gubler Orchids
About 3 miles back, we'll visit Gubler Orchids' acres of orchid growing greenhouses with a vast array of orchid varieties and carnivorous plants. Great Outdoors has arranged for a tour of the greenhouses where you will learn about orchid varieties, growing techniques, and pick out orchids to purchase from the greenhouses or the showroom. Please bring $5 cash per person for the orchid's tour.

A repeat of the ride on the 11th - Attention Time Travelers! Set your Way-Back Machines to the 60s, 70s and 80s for a 2-wheeled tour of the locations of past (and present) resorts and watering holes for the city’s LGBTQ+ community. Our tour will begin and end in Palm Springs but we’ll travel south to Cathedral City to see where most of the bars and resorts were located during the not-so-gay-friendly 60s, 70s, and 80s. Although PSP is an LGBTQ+ mecca today, it wasn’t always that way: Former PS mayors and city councils (we’re looking at you, Frank Bogert) actively opposed gay establishments so most gay and gay-friendly businesses found a warmer reception in the unincorporated areas to the south that eventually became Cathedral City.
On our ride, we’ll cruise by the sites of the following once-thriving bars and resorts: Warm Sands Villas, Camp Palm Springs, Daddy Warbucks, Oil Can Harry’s, Queen’s Attic, The Party Room, Sir James, Aunt Hattie’s, CC Construction Company, Dave’s Villa Caprice, The Villas, and The Desert Palms Hotel. Some of these were well-known, while others were more obscure or short-lived. If you ever experienced any of them, you are encouraged to share your memories with the rest of the group!
We will meet at the Mizell Center before heading over to Warm Sands, followed by a ride past the lesser-known gay resorts along San Lorenzo Street. From there we’ll pedal south toward Cathedral City using quiet streets and the bike path along Palm Canyon Drive, eventually passing behind the current Target/Trader Joe’s shopping center and then on to Perez Road. We’ll take a jog up to the current Cathedral City civic center then continue on to the most distant point in our travels: Palm Canyon and Date Palm Drive.
We will return by following the wash from Date Palm to Cathedral Canyon, then take the Whitewater Trail to the Tahquitz Country Club. Depending on how the group feels, we’ll stop for some refreshments and perhaps a bite to eat at the Tahquitz Creek Golf Club before continuing through the Prescott Preserve and returning to the Mizell Center.
This route features a varied mix of surfaces and bike routes, including dedicated bike paths, streets with bike lanes, and some quiet residential streets. Surfaces range from butter-smooth pavement to sandy trails and some broken asphalt. All street crossings will be at traffic lights or crosswalks with crossing lights.
The total length of the ride will be approximately 18 miles, which we’ll cover within about 3 hours. The route is mostly flat but there are a few gentle grades and a couple of steep-but-short sections under bridges.
Restrooms will be available at the Cathedral City Civic Center and the Tahquitz Creek Golf Club.
What to Bring: water (2 to 3 liters recommended), snacks, sun protection, and layered clothing. Carry emergency contact information.
All riders are strongly encouraged to wear helmets. Inflate your tires to the recommended pressure. You may want to bring a tire pump, spare tube, bike tools, and sunscreen.
Preparation for flat tires: Due to the potential for a flat tire, you are strongly encouraged to carry a spare inner tube that fits your bike. The trip leader will have some tools and a pump and can help with tire changes if necessary to help keep the ride on track.
Meeting Location: Parking lot of the Mizell Senior Center, located at the corner of Ramon and Sunrise. 8:00 AM.

There was a fair amount of damage in Big Morongo Canyon Preserve due to the tropical storm this summer, and some of the trails were destroyed. There are still 2 major hiking areas untouched, and this hike will take the easier one to the mouth of the canyon hike and back. The hike will be about 3 miles and should take about 2.5 hours. Bring water and some food. The elevation gain will be about 100' or so.
This hike is rated moderate. Hiking poles are not needed but could be useful. Bring 1-2 liters of water and a snack or lunch.
Meeting is at 8:00 am in the parking lot next to Carl's Jr, at the corner of N. Palm Canyon and Racquet Club in Palm Springs, enter on Racquet Club click here

There are remnants of mining operations and outstanding vistas of the Chuckwalla and Chocolate Mountains.
Rated moderate plus, with some steep climbs and descents, narrow canyon with rock obstacles, suitable for stock 4x4 vehicles high clearance with trail rated all terrain tires. We have not scouted this route, so be aware and prepared if we encounter unexpected events.

Come and experience the Salton Sea for yourself, and discover why it is one of the most extraordinary and fascinating places in California. It is a unique place with many hidden treasures and secrets that are not well known. It has been forgotten as a busy tourist attraction of bygone years. Today, we have an amazing place to visit and explore. The sunsets and sunrises are stunning and peaceful. You should take the opportunity to experience it before its receding water levels cause it to change and vanish.
One of the world's largest inland seas and lowest spots on earth at -227 below sea level, Salton Sea was re-created in 1905 when high spring flooding on the Colorado River crashed the canal gates leading into the developing Imperial Valley. For the next 18 months the entire volume of the Colorado River rushed downward into the Salton Trough. By the time engineers were finally able to stop the breaching water in 1907, the Salton Sea had been born at 45 miles long and 20 miles wide – equaling about 130 miles of shoreline. Salton Sea State Recreation Area covers 14 miles of the northeastern shore. Campers, birdwatchers, photographers and hikers can enjoy the site's many recreation opportunities. View the Salton Sea Recreation Area Brochure here.
We will be camping at the Mecca Beach campground at the Salton Sea Recreation Area (SRA). The meet and greet, potluck and other activities will take place there. March is an ideal time to visit with mild temperatures. Mecca Beach Campground is remote. The markets and activities are a 20+ minute drive from the campground. This campground is 50 yards from the water. In recent years, most life in the Salton Sea has perished, so there is no more massive fish die-offs, which means there is no longer that potent scent. In fact there is typically no smell coming from the sea at all. The sea itself is awe-inspiring. You should not swim in the water at Salton Sea, nor should you allow your dogs to drink the water. It is heavily polluted with fertilizer chemicals from farm run-off.
Activities could include hiking a slot canyon in the Mecca Hills, a 4x4 excursion, or an easy hike to the Visitor Center to view exhibits and a video on the Salton Sea. Other activities could be a road trip to Niland area sites, including Salvation Mountain and East Jesus in Slab City, Obsidian Butte, the mud pot volcanoes, and the Salton Sea Reclamation Project. Check the whiteboard for updated activities info.
NOTE: This event is limited to GO members. When you register, you'll need to have your credit card ready and pay your registration fee within 15 mins. If you are not a member yet, you can first join as a member online (click here) and then return here to register.

The Maze-Windows Loop
The Maze-Windows Loop is located near the main entrance to Joshua Tree National Park and the trailhead is an hour from our meeting place. Because of crowding at the park entrance and limited trailhead parking, we will meet early and, hopefully, beat the crowds.
The 6 mile loop hike is moderately challenging and we will aim to complete the hike in 3+ hours. We will experience a variety of terrain ranging from flat and sandy to rocky climbs as we enjoy the vistas and granite outcroppings. Drivers may opt for lunch in Joshua Tree or Yucca Valley after the hike.
Parking is limited. Carpooling is encouraged and may be available if offered by driver. You are responsible for arranging you own transportation or ride share. It is 55 miles to Joshua Tree West entrance and approximately 2 miles to the trailhead from the entrance station.
Hiking Requirements: Good physical condition with capability of hiking 8+ miles, recommended. You must be a Great outdoors (GO) member to attend this hike.
Hike Leader: Spencer B (email)
Fees/Charges: Joshua Tree National Park entrance fee.
What to bring: Ten Essentials (click here), water (2+ liters recommended), lunch/snacks, sun protection, layered clothing and hiking poles. Carry Emergency Contact Information (ICE). Sturdy hiking footwear with good tread and adequate drinking water are required.
Cancel: If you cannot make a hike for which you have registered, please cancel as others may be on the waitlist. You may cancel directly from your profile setting or notify the hike leader.

Join the San Diego chapter for a virtual tour of the Jet Propulsion Laboratories in Pasadena, CA! We have secured a reservation to be led on a zoom tour by a trained JPL tour guide. JPL is the home of many NASA projects including the teams who helped build the Mars rover and is currently prepping probes to go to the moons of Jupiter. This is a truly special experience that is quite difficult to secure so we are very excited to offer the opportunity. Future plans include an on-site visit but this option will allow wider availability. The virtual tour is limited to 35 attendees and we will send out the zoom link and zoom rules prior to the event.
Registration will initially be limited to members in good standing. This may change at a later date depending on interest.

Morgan Trail Day Hike
Wenesday, April 2, 8 AM to 2 PM
This hike is designed especially for senior and slower hikers. The hike is scheduled on a weekday.
Trip Leader: Doug Cable, Phone: 949-922-1452,
(Write up and picture taken from the United States National Forest Website.)
Elevation: Change 720 feet
Distance: 4.2 miles one way
Hike Time: 4 hours
Difficulty: moderate, only because of distance
This beautiful 4.2 mile (one way) out and back trail takes hikers through the manzanita and oak lined wilderness of Morrell Canyon. Willows and sycamore trees hug the canyon bottom. Water flows freely during a wet season.
Listed as moderate with an elevation change of 720 feet, hikers meander through oak groves before coming to an open meadow with an abundance of grass and wildflowers. We can turn back at the beautiful oak grove, depending on how people are doing; but at the mid-way point (4.2 miles), hikers are rewarded with terrific views over Lake Elsinore out to Mt. San Jacinto, Mt. San Gorgonio and Mt. Baldy.
Located in the heart of the San Mateo Canyon Wilderness, this trail provides the serene and secluded experience that hikers can only get from a natural, untouched forest setting.
We leave from the Candy Store on Ortega Highway, 34950 Ortega Hwy at precisely 08:00. Click for a map. There is plenty of parking in the U.S Forest Service lot across the street from the Candy Store, which requires an adventure pass.
We then hike to the true trailhead on S. Main Divide Road, 4.2 miles, and then retrace our steps. Rattlesnakes and ticks are possible. Bring 10 essentials, sunscreen, a snack, and at least 1 liter of water.
As I write this, state route 74 is being widened, and may suffer from lane closures. It is CalTrans district 8. Check road conditions before you start so you can allow enough time to arrive by 8:00. The Ortega Highway is a potentially dangerous road; drive safely. The Ortega Highway will be closed on the west side of the Candy Store from Nichol's Inst to the candy store. It looks open on the east side of the candy store, so we should be ok. Take the I15 to Lake Elsinore. Park in the San Juan Loop parking lot across from the candy store. An adventure pass is required.
Registration opens February 3
With limited space available, you won't want to miss out on this exclusive opportunity. Reserve your spot now and be part of the excitement!
Trip Itinerary and details to be added later
For those who like the comfort approach to touring the desert art scene, Great Outdoors Palm Springs will be hosting a
Curated bus tour of Desert X art installations
Sit back, relax, and leave the driving to us (actually a licensed, trained bus operator!) and enjoy a selection of outdoor art exhibitions!
Desert X is an outdoor contemporary art exhibition that happens every 2 years with installations throughout the Coachella Valley...returning in 2025. Our trip will take about 4-5 hours to travel to 5 selected exhibits across the Valley chosen by our expert docent Ron F. especially for us! At each selected installation we will walk a short distance (usually less than 200 yards) from the parking location to the installation where our docent will discuss the artwork, artists, and background of why it/they were selected for this year's event. There will be time for participants to walk around and enjoy the exhibit before departing to our next location.
Transportation will be provided by Lin Lines of Palm Springs from our meeting point and returning; the cost of the transport is included in the ticket price. There will be snacks and drinks provided by Great Outdoors.
Desert X is a biennial event in the Coachella Valley, where time unfolds in geological epochs and the wind weaves stories through ancient mountains, a profound reverence for the enduring spirit of this harsh yet resilient region emerges, challenging us to glean wisdom from its vast knowledge. Far from an empty expanse, the desert landscape acts as a canvas of real and imagined histories, narrating tales of displacement, sovereignty and adaptation superimposed over visible testaments of time.
Reflecting on the desert’s deep time evolutions, the fifth edition of Desert X will delve deeper into nonlinear narratives of time, forming a space where ancestral wisdom intertwines and collides with contemporary visions for our collective future.
Desert X is curated by Artistic Director Neville Wakefield and DX25 Co-curator Kaitlin Garcia-Maestas. Checkout the 2025 Desert X website at https://desertx.org/dx/dx-25-coachella-valley.

Description: Lost Horse Loop Trail is a 6.8 mile trail located in Joshua Tree National Park just off the Keys View Road. The trail follows the remains of the old service road for the mine which is located about 1.5 miles from the trailhead at elevation 4600-5120 feet. The mine, over 100 years old, is one of the best preserved and was once the most productive mines in Joshua Tree having produced 10,000 ounces of gold and 16,000 ounces of silver between the years of 1894 and 1931.
Lost Horse Mine was discovered by Johnny Lang while either looking for one of his lost horses or a stolen horse whose tracks took him to the Lost Horse Valley and the camp of Jim McHaney with his gang of cattle rustlers and horse thieves. After being told he did not lose a horse, Johnny Lang left and on his way back ran into “Dutch” Frank Diebold. After being shown a piece of ore, Johnny bought the rights to the mine for $1,000 from “Dutch.” After a number of partners, Johnny was eventually forced to sell his share of the mine after his main partner, J.D. Ryan, hired a detective who caught him stealing. Johnny didn’t go too far and settled in the next canyon near the mine now named Johnny Long Canyon. In 1925, Johnny left a note on his cabin door saying he had left for food and bedded down for the night at the entrance to the canyon not too far from the mine. He died that night and was not found until two months later by Bill Keys, owner of the Keys View Ranch. After reporting his death to the county coroner, Mr. Keys buried Johnny where he was found near the Keys View Road just at the turn to the Lost Horse Mine parking area.
Hiking Requirements: The elevation ranges from 4,100-5,100 feet so you will need to be in good physical condition for this hike. Click here for more information.
Carpooling is encouraged and may be available if offered by driver. You are responsible for arranging your own transportation or ride share.

A special highlight is the Verde River Greenway State Natural Area, a beautiful six-mile stretch of the river, home to a rare Cottonwood and Willow riparian forest. This incredible ecosystem is one of fewer than 20 in the world! With each season, the area comes alive with a variety of wildlife. You’ll see everything from majestic raptors to colorful songbirds, along with mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.
The area also has a rich history, long before settlers arrived, it was home to Native American tribes like the Sinagua, Yavapai, and Apache. In the late 1800s, Anglo settlers began farming the land and supporting the soldiers at Camp Verde and miners in nearby Jerome.

OCLB Annual Yosemite Trip!
Orange County/Long Beach
goes to
Yosemite National Park
Curry Village Canvas Tents
May 9-12, 2025
Need we say more?
Yes we will!
Spring in Yosemite can't be beat!
We will be heading to Yosemite at the BEST time to visit this illustrious National Park! The weather will be amazing with the waterfalls at their most dynamic! Our lodging for the 3-night outing will be in Camp Curry, in unheated canvas tents.
We have sold out for 3 years in a row (one year out of four was cancelled due to the major snow/landslide that closed Curry Village for a few months).
Do NOT hesitate to book as soon as possible as we expect this event to be SOLD OUT again!
If you would like to visit Yosemite in it's winter grandeur and the famous Horsetail Fire Fall - check out San Diego's Yosemite trip in February.
Link: https://www.greatoutdoors.org/event-5969602
Yosemite is one of the most popular National Parks in the country and we in southern California are very fortunate to have it so close. If you have never seen it then this Great Outdoors trip is a good opportunity for you to be introduced to this special place.
If you have been there one or more times, then you’ll understand why many have made a Yosemite visit an annual event. The grandeur and majesty of the park are so enriching that Yosemite can be experienced and enjoyed again and again. The natural beauty of the park has inspired many for the last 150 years, but perhaps none more effusive than John Muir, who said of Yosemite, “It is by far the grandest of all the special temples of Nature I was ever permitted to enter.” Please join us in this temple of the great outdoors.
The location of this trip will be Yosemite Valley. Our accommodations are canvas tents in Camp Curry, a rustic but charming village near the east end of the valley.
Arrival should be about 4:00 pm on Friday afternoon.
For both Saturday and Sunday, there will be optional hikes each day to choose from - one will be strenuous, the other will be easy. Or simply visit the galleries, stores, bike ride, museums and/or stroll in the valley floor!
On Monday morning we must check out of the cabins by 11:00 am.
More details will be announced as we finalize registration.
Canvas Tents:
We have secured four canvas tents for our group.
Each tent has 3 single beds and a double. We can max out at 5 people per tent. We are hoping to get a couple or friends (with benefits or without benefits) to share the double bed. This way we can max out each tent with 5 people so that we can get as many as possible to experience Yosemite for this excursion.
Typically women have no problems sharing a tent with guys; however if we have enough women for this trip - we will need a minimum of 4 women (preferable 5 to max out capacity); the women can have their own canvas tent.
If you want to be in the same tent with another member please note that on the registration.
If you prefer sharing a double cot with someone please note that on the registration and who the person is so we match you with the correct person.
If you have a LOUD snoring issue, you should consider not attending so that others will not be affected by the noise. This is close sleeping quarters.
Driving & Directions:
We will review carpooling options once registration is finalized both to save the environment and save on fuel costs. We usually stop in Fresno for lunch prior to heading into Yosemite. (Chipotle stop in the below photo).
What else?
Cooking facilities/campfire rings are not available in Curry Village. However, there are several dining options near our cabins.
Such as Pizza & Beer, Cafeteria (with Vegan options!) and of course burgers & fries too. A general store is also open for purchasing food items and other material goods. You may bring snack food and drinks, but all food and scented items must be stored in the bear-proof storage locker in front of the cabin. This includes all food, food related items, toiletries, sundries and ice chests. Bears have a strong sense of smell and are attracted to anything they think will lead them to human food. Remember not to store these items in your vehicle or canvas tent . It is recommended to use sealed plastic containers for storing your food inside the bear boxes. This makes it easier to keep your food organized, and away from campground critters.
Showers, sinks and flush toilets are all available to participants.
Be sure to remember a flashlight or headlamp to find your way around Camp Curry at night. In addition, a sleeping bag (recommended), an extra blanket or a honey bunny may help keep you warm at night. Other things to bring:
•Warm outer gear appropriate for snow and/or rain or Shorts and T-shirts for warm days
•Layered under gear (long underwear, etc.)
•Hat, gloves, scarf, etc.
•Sunglasses, sun block (for your face), lip balm
•Sturdy hiking shoes
Weather: Average temperatures in May in the Yosemite Valley range from the high 40s/low 50s (night time) to the low-mid 70s during the day. Conditions may vary between sun, clouds, rain, or snow. Be prepared for anything. Expect the unexpected!
The trip leader will inform you of the weather conditions a couple days before our arrival but you may also want to keep abreast of them by using the Yosemite National Park website. (Click here.)
Price:
$210 for Great Outdoors members for the 4 days/3 nights event. Come early on Friday to enjoy the park and/or stay late on Monday to enjoy the pack! We will check into our canvas tents at 4 PM on Friday.
This is a members only event, thus an annual membership ($25) must be purchased prior to signing up for this event.
Cancellations will be authorized up to 21 days prior to start day of event IF a replacement can be found; a $20 cancellation fee will be charged.

We are joining a normally scheduled Norwegian Cruise on their latest and most innovative ship, the Norwegian Prima.
Here is the link to learn the details and pricing of the cruise:
