PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Come out for a fun, friendly, and educational hike in Joshua Tree National Park. We will hike along the Hi-View Trail loop and learn about the plants and animals that are native to the park. The hike is fairly easy, only 1.3 miles long, with a 400 ft elevation gain. Desert Institute staff will share their knowledge and stories from the park. After the hike, we will gather at the Yucca Valley visitor center for a mixer to get to know local folks and new friends from the surrounding communities. This event is very Queer friendly, all friends of Dorthy invited!

PROGRAM AGENDA

  • Hi-View Hike 4:00PM - 5:00PM (1.3 Miles)
  • LGBTQ+ Mixer 6:00PM - 8:00PM (Yucca Valley)

MEETING LOCATION

The hike will be located at Hi-View Trailhead, Yucca Valley, CA 92284. Approximately 12.5 miles from the Joshua Tree National Park WEST entrance.

The mixer will be located at JTNPA Visitor Center West - 55922 29 Palms Hwy, Yucca Valley, CA 92284

REQUIRED PREPARATION

Waiver: All participants going on the hike must complete the participation waiver.

ACTIVITY LEVEL

Easy/Moderate The hike ascends 400 feet of elevation gain and reaches a high point with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. We will stop at multiple points to discuss plants, wildlife, and geologic features. Please contact us if you have questions about your ability to participate. desertinstitute@joshuatree.org

WHAT’S INCLUDED

● First aid and emergency supplies for the group

● At the mixer we will provide free food and drinks!

WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED

● Admission to Joshua Tree National Park

● Lodging, or Transportation

WHAT TO BRING

The essentials for all field courses:

● Water, between 3 and 4 liters per person for a full day outing

● Food and snacks, easily packed and eaten in the field (please leave no trace)

● Close-toed athletic shoes or hiking boots; no sandals, not even hiking sandals!

● Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen; light-colored long-sleeved shirts are

recommended and very effective on hot days

● Warm layers for cooler mornings/evenings (it can be surprisingly cold!)

● Backpack to carry food, water, and any personal items you need for the day

SPECIAL NOTES ABOUT THIS ACTIVITY

There is no cell service in the park! Please allow ample time to arrive at the meeting

location; park entrances may be very busy on weekends (see FAQs).

Please make sure you check weather conditions and dress accordingly
