Mastodon Peak in Joshua Tree National Park

The Mastodon loop trail is an easy, 2.5 mile loop that travels past the Mastodon mine and Winona Mill site.  The mine was a gold mine that operated between 1919 and 1932.  The Mastodon peak (3440’), just above the mine, was named by early prospectors because of its resemblance to the early pre-historic elephant head.  A short spur trail leads to the summit of the peak.  The trail to the peak, although not too difficult, will require some rock scrambling to get to the top.  From the top of the peak there are views of the Cottonwood area, Eagle Peak, Monument Mountain, Mt. San Jacinto, Shavers Valley and the Salton Sea.
