This coastal hike will explore 650 acres of open space straddling UCSB and the City of Goleta. We will start at the UCSB North Campus Open Space, which is a coastal wetland restoration project in the process of returning the Devereux Slough to its natural habitat after being a golf course for over 50 years. Restoration of the estuary supports a diversity of birds, fish, and wildlife; absorbs flood waters; and is adaptive to sea level rise. Trails around the slough provide scenic views and connectivity to the California Coastal Trail.
The hike will then lead into Goleta's Ellwood Mesa Preserve, following the bluffs and circling back through the Ellwood Butterfly Grove. The 230-acre Ellwood Mesa is popular with hikers, runners, bikers, surfers, and horseback riders who enjoy this natural preserve of exceptional beauty. The Monarch Butterfly Preserves draw visitors and school children from throughout the county.
Directions: 6969 Whittier Drive, Goleta. From the 101, take the Storke Road exit, and head toward UCSB. Go past the light at Phelps Road, then make the 1st right onto Whittier Drive. In about 1/10 mile, turn left into the parking lot (North Campus Open Space).
Distance: 5.5 miles; about 2.5-3 hours; 200 feet of elevation
Difficulty: Although the hike is a relatively flat walk along the bluffs and coastal wetlands, the difficulty level of this is considered moderate because of the distance.
