Great Outdoors LA Chapter’s June hike will be a twist on a popular favorite in the San Gabriels.

Rather than the type 3 boulder scramble required to reach the summit of Strawberry Peak, we’ll stay on the trail to the north side of the mountain where a natural spring and forest-surrounded meadows await.

We’ll meet at 7:00am on Sunday, June 11, at the Red Box parking lot, at the intersection of Mt. Wilson Rd. and the Angeles Crest Highway (SR 2). Be sure to display an Adventure Pass on your dashboard or mirror while parked in this lot. The early start time is partly to beat the normal weekend traffic and partly because much of this trail is exposed and we want to beat the heat.

The hike out to the meadows is approximately 8 miles round trip with 1,400 feet of elevation gain total – so a moderate difficulty hike. Bring sturdy footwear and hiking poles if you use them.

We also strongly recommend that you wear full-length pants due to the stinging poodle-dog bush that has grown up all over the area after the Bobcat Fire of 2020. There is a chance of rain in the forecast, and the marine layer has been thick and persistent lately, so removable layers and a light poncho are a good idea.

Please RSVP here (free), so hike leader Matthew Bokach orobourical@yahoo.com  can notify you in the event of a weather cancellation, as well as with any other questions.

As always on Great Outdoors hikes, we recommend having the ten essentials (list here. In particular bring enough water and electrolytes, sunscreen, and a hat if you wear one.

A description of the hike with some photos can be found here:

Note: This describes two routes. Scroll down midway to "Strawberry Peak Trail to Strawberry Meadow." This is the route we will take (not the Colby Canyon route). We won't climb to the summit on this hike, but we will enjoy the hike to the spring and meadow.

Health Problems/allergiesIt is the responsibility of participants to carry on their person a record of significant allergies, medications and medical history in the event of a medical emergency.  Discuss any medical concerns with the hike leader if you wish.
