SBVC – Aliso Park Campout
May 26 - 29, 2022
For Memorial Day weekend this year, the SB/VC chapter is heading out to a local favorite of mine, Aliso Park campground!. This is a beautiful little Los Padres National Forest campground located off of Hwy 166 near the small town of Cuyama.
As a National Forest campground, it is primitive, but it’s isolation makes it a nice and mellow spot that doesn’t usually get the noisy crowding you sometimes find during this major holiday weekend. And that’s GOOD in my book!
This trip will be starting on Thursday May 26th, running through the weekend to Sunday May 29th. For anyone so inclined, I’ll actually be out there on Wednesday May 25th, to get the lay of the land prior to folks arriving on Thursday.
As this is a National forest primitive campground, there are no reservations, but, also, the only ‘fee’ for camping is a Wilderness Adventure Pass. Already have one? BRING IT ALONG! Otherwise we’ll have to purchase one for you, and that just adds to your price for the trip.
Speaking of prices, wondering how much the trip costs? It’s a very reasonable $20 per person, for four days of camping fun with your fellow Great Outdoors members!
IF you do not have an Adventure Pass, either purchase one yourself (they are available at many Big 5 Sporting Goods stores, among others.)
OR let me know, and I can pick one up for you ($30 for a year pass) and that will be added to your trip fee! In the big picture though, it’s much easier to just get one for yourself. If I get one for you, you will take it with you at the end of the trip FYI.
Our schedule for the trip (while somewhat soft on departure times and such) is as follows:
Thursday: Campers arrive, set up, meet and greet each other. For this day, plan on cooking/fixing/making dinner yourself at the campground.
Friday: This is our day to visit/explore the Carrizo Plain National Monument. We’ll be heading off to the Plain/Goodwin Visitors Center after breakfast. Plan on either taking lunch with you, or plan on at least having some snacks/water with you.
We’ll be continuing on (after exploring the Carrizo Plain) into the historical town of Santa Margarita, home to wine tasting rooms, antique shops, and a few places that are great possibilities for a late lunch/early dinner.
Otherwise, dinner for today will be one cooked on your own back at camp, or something you pick up on the way back.
Saturday: This will be our day to visit the West Kern Oil Museum in nearby Taft. In its heyday this area was a virtual boom area of the oil industry, and the museum has so much from this era to show and share.
After breakfast we’ll be heading off to this location, with the idea that after a good exploration of the museum, we’ll be exploring Taft, another town that has much to offer in the way of antique and thrift shopping, as well as some great locations to check out for a late lunch,
We’ll be back to the campground this afternoon/evening for our usual Saturday potluck, to share some great food and networking with your fellow campers!
Sunday: this is pack up and head for home day! I know, we all want to stay longer, but, reality is, many of us have to get home for work eventually, right?
On the plus side though, if you’re retired, you can stay on for a few days if you so choose (maximum of 14 days in one place though…)
Hiking: There is some hiking available in the area, but as Gener and I are still looking into the possibilities, nothings set down yet.
Offroading: There is the option for some offroading in this area also, so that, along with hiking, will be discussed Thursday night around the campfire, to see who wants to do what.
So come on along, have some great evenings around the campfire, join us in exploring some places you’ve never been before, and make some new great friends!
Trip Leader Joe D

Join us for a fascinating walk and talk through the heart of Mission Trails Regional Park (MTRP) and learn from Professor Michael Wilken-Robertson, Anthropologist, Naturalist, author of Kumeyaay Ethnobotany: Shared Heritage of the Californias, and esteemed SDGO member.
This event is designed to be accessible and inclusive of all members of our LGBTQIA+ community and their allies. Those who enjoy silence and shared spiritual experience in nature, please come to the outdoor amphitheater (follow the concrete walkway to the right of the visitor center) for an inclusive, outdoor meditation led by Rev. Caedmon Grace (he/him) of MCC San Diego beginning at 8:30 a.m. The amphitheater is a short distance from the handicapped parking spaces at the top of the visitor center parking lot, and the entire facility is highly accessible.
At 9:00 a.m., Mike will provide an ethnobotanical overview and answer our questions. We’ll wrap up by 9:30 am and participants can either:
Join Mike on an easy, 2-mile roundtrip, relatively flat walk (175 ft. elevation gain overall) to the grinding rocks alongside the San Diego River that flows through the gorge, and along the way he will share about how indigenous peoples have long used many of the familiar native plants of the area for food, medicine, construction materials, tools, and ceremony.
OR you can explore the award-winning visitor center, exhibits, and theater with films about the geography and history of the park and the native plant garden along the walkway to the amphitheater, with many plants in bloom at this time, all are easily accessible for those who rely on a walker or wheelchair for support.
We invite all LGBTQIA+ people and their allies to join us for this special holiday experience! Please be sure to mask-up when appropriate and social distance as needed, which is very easy.
Walk Details: We will meet at the MTRP Visitor Center Outdoor Amphitheater where we will see examples of the many animals and other critters that inhabit the area and also learn about how Kumeyaay territory extends from the coasts to the mountains and deserts. From there we will walk down the Riverside Grinding Site Trail, with stops all along the way to talk about native vegetation. The trail leads to one of the archaeological sites in the park: bedrock mortars and grinding slicks used by the Kumeyaay Indians for food preparation.
From there we will head to the Visitor Center Loop Trail, which will take us through coastal sage scrub, chaparral, and riparian woodland habitats, where we will learn more about how the plants in these areas have been used in daily life as well as in stories and other aspects of native cosmology. Our guide, GO member Mike Wilken, is an anthropologist, naturalist, and author of the book Kumeyaay Ethnobotany: Shared Heritage of the Californias.

Tram's Mountain Station to Mt. San Jacinto Peak via Sid Davis Route
Start time: 9:40am at the Tram's Valley Station waiting area with a tram ticket (no later!)
IMPORTANT INFO for this hike: Emergency Contact Information, sun protection/hat, and hiking poles which may be helpful. Sturdy hiking footwear with good tread and adequate drinking water (2 liters minimum) are required. Bring lunch/snacks and of course, a wonderful attitude.
Details: This all-day vigorous adventure is as good as it gets--for hikers who are physically fit. We start out by taking the popular Palm Springs Aerial Tramway which ascends almost a mile straight up into the San Jacinto wilderness. Then a brief stop at the Ranger station to sign and drop off a required permit, before heading off to the Round Valley / Sid Davis junction. From there we go off trail up the Sid Davis route (some steep areas) to where the main trail meets the first of two major switchbacks to the peak (with a short break if required). While ascending, we might see deer along the way within the midst of the raw wilderness. At this point, the well-maintained trail heads up north towards the next switchback. The forest is somewhat open in this area with lush vegetation on the sides of the trail. This area also has nice views of Long Valley and in the far distance, Coachella Valley. At the beginning of the second switchback will be a close encounter of Miller Peak. Then, off trail again turning south and up towards San Jacinto Peak. After a brief visit at the Stone Hut (emergency shelter), we head up to our highest point (a rock scramble up a 100 yards or so). While at the SJ Peak, a leisurely (about 30 minutes) lunch break. While enjoying our lunch/relaxation, there are excellent views of the Banning Pass, Mt. San Gorgonio, Coachella Valley.
Poor weather and/or trail conditions cancels this hike.
Please call 760-320-2774 or email David at dhs321@gmail.com for inquiries.
Hiking Requirements: You will need to be in good physical condition for this hike. Click here for more information.

The Metro Art Docent Council in conjunction with the Orange County/Long Beach Chapter of Great Outdoos presents:
Docent Led Tour of the Art of the Metro B (Red) Line, starting at the Westlake-MacArthur Park Station
June 19, 2022, 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM
You may register for the trip beginning May 22, 2022. If after registering, your
plans change, please cancel so the next person on the waiting list can register.
Contact: Frederick Brown E-mail: fredincal346@gmail.com Phone: 562-754-1838
For people going from Long Beach, we will meet at the Willow Station at 9:00AM and ride on the 9:20AM (Blue) Line train arriving at the Westlake-MacArthur Park Station at 10:28AM after changing to the B (Red) line at the 7th and Metro Station. There are coffee places near the station. (But remember, there are not places to use the bathroom, until we get to MacArthur Park Station.)
For those who are driving, meet on the street level outside the station on the East side of Alvarado just North of 7tj Street in Los Angeles.
Click here for the map for the Willow Station parking garage and click here for the map for the Westlake-MacArthur Park Station area.
The art in the stations of the Los Angeles Metro Rail system reflects the neighborhoods and history of each location. While the majority of Metro's budget goes towards construction and transit operator programs, the Metro Board policy mandates that 0.5% of Metro Rail construction costs go towards funding public art.
We will start at the Westlake-MacArthur Park Station. On the mezzanine level are a series of tiles which represent the scene in and around the park. Suspended from the ceiling under the skylight is a sculpture painted with light. At the ends of the station are two ceramic tile murals titled La Luna and El Sol.
Our next stop will be the 7th and Metro Station. On the mezzanine level on both sides of the station are tiles. On the Figueroa Side the tiles represent a film strip of Fantasy Movies, and on the Hope Street Side Spectacle Movies. At the Hope Street entrance is a triptych made of ceramic tiles titled Heaven to Earth.
Leaving 7th and Metro Station, we will stop at Pershing Square to see the Neon Art from the platform. Outside, we will look at the neighborhood which has the historic Bradley Building, Angel's Flight and the Grand Central Market.
Then, we will proceed to the Civic Center Station. Here we will see the mosaic "In the Living Rock" outside the station. Inside the station, we will view 52 glass mosaics that reflect the history of the area with themes of sports, art, performance and fashion. On the station platform, we will look up to the celling and ponder over the art titled "I dream of flying."
This will mark the end of the official tour.
Click here for tips on riding Metro.
Because Metro Art tours have not fully resumed since the pandemic started, this will not be an office Docent Council of the Art of the Metro tour.
1) The tour will take about 2 hours and will be approximately 90% walking.
2) Members will need to purchase a day pass on their TAP card. If you don't have a TAP card, you can purchase one at the station where you join us for $2 and load a day pass on to it.
3) There are no public restrooms in the station, but there are restrooms at MacArthur Park, in Macy's at 7th and Metro, in the Grand Central Market at Pershing Square, and at Union Station.
The seven bridges hike is a semi-established hiking path through several neighborhoods of urban San Diego. Banker Hill, Golden Hill, Hillcrest, Balboa, and North Park are all visited along the way. At each bridge I will provide a brief history and trivia about that feature. The hike allows for the observation of different architectural examples, urban gardenscapes, tucked away historical neighborhoods, and a pretty decent workout. At the end of the hike we will arrive at Great Maple restaurant where anyone who wishes would be welcome to stay for brunch following the hike. I will have a reservation for up to the full group.
Hike leader: KJ Archer
Date: June 26th, 2022 at 9am
Location: Start at Vermont St Bridge @ approx. 4071 Vermont St, San Diego, CA 92103
Parking: Residential street parking is available but expect it to be limited and include a small walk to the starting point. Alternatively, the Hub shopping center is located across the Vermont street bridge.
Length of hike: Due to various construction projects ongoing in the area the hike can vary between 5.5 and 6.2 miles. The exact length and path will be provided closer to the date of the hike so construction paths can be verified.
Fees: None except for optional brunch at the end of the hike
Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Some steep hills and inclines and a few stairs but no technical terrain. Elevation gain roughly 350 feet. Nearly all paved asphalt/concrete. The Spruce Street Suspension bridge does sway a noticeable amount. People with unstable gait or fear of heights should be aware of this.

Grand Teton National Park Trip with Day Hikes
July 13-20, 2022
Trip Leader Contact: Doug Cable, dccable2@verizon.net
Preliminary Trip notes for Scouting Hikes, Grand Teton National Park
July 13 to 20th.
Save the date and make your reservations.
July 13 to 20 we will scout the day hike trails in the Grand Teton National Park.
There are multiple trails that range from easy, to easy/moderate, to moderate, to strenuous and to very strenuous. We will not be doing the very strenuous hikes. Which trails we pick will depend on the preferences of the group. There will be hikes for every level of fitness. We can also break up into several groups depending on what people want to do, but I'm hoping not to do that. Nevertheless, there will be no solo hiking because the area has Grizzly Bears. Bring a bear bell.
Participants will be responsible for their own transportation, food and lodging. Make your lodging reservations now. Sharing of lodging is encouraged to decrease cost and facilitate communications. Lodgings available include tent cabins, camping, cabins. You can click on the names of Luton's Teton Cabins, Rustic Inn, Colter Bay Village Tent Cabins and Jackson Lake Lodge to go to their websites. Luton’s Teton Cabins is recommended, as is the Rustic Inn. Larry Purtle and Frederick Brown have each reserved a Tent Cabin in the Park. Each cabin can accommodate four non snoring sleepers. Combined, Larry and Frederick have four extra beds. Space is still available in the Jackson Lake Lodge within the park as of this writing. Coulter Bay campground is available. There are also motels in Jackson. This is not really a campout; it is a series of dayhikes.
There is a modest Great Outdoors cost of $20 to cover planning logistics. I have 2 books of potential hikes and also park information. We will have a zoom orientation meeting prior for planning. This entire adventure is a scouting trip.
These may be updated/amended by the time of the event

Agnew Meadows Group Campground (We have sites 1, 2, & 3) is located in the Reds Meadow Valley section of the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, just west of the full-service community of Mammoth Lakes, California. This beautiful campground provides access to some of the most spectacular wilderness in the Sierras and many outdoor activities such as horseback riding, fishing, hiking and photography and a pack station with horseback riding tours and supplies is just down the road. Within a few miles, campers will find the High Trail, Shadow Creek Trail and River Trail, all open to hiking and horseback riding. Fishing enthusiasts can try for trout in the many area lakes or the North Fork of the San Joaquin River. The campground sits in a lodgepole pine forest surrounded by high mountain peaks, adjacent to creeks and a small lake. The elevation is 8,400 feet. Spring and early summer wildflower displays bring even more color to the landscape. Many species of wildlife call the mountains home, such as black bear, mountain lions, mule deer, pine marten, pika and numerous fish and birds. Nearby Attractions: The area is close to Devils Postpile National Monument, Minaret Falls and the spectacular Rainbow Falls. This area offers unparalleled photographic opportunities and are great day trips. Reds Meadow Valley is also home to Reds Meadow Resort, a favorite spot for hikers and campers. The resort not only rents cabins, but also houses a shower facility open to the public. Their general store is a great place to stock up on necessities. Mammoth is also just a short drive away for supplies.
Historically, there has been a high level of bear activity at Agnew Meadows Campground. A bear-proof locker is located at each site at Agnew Meadows Campground. All food and scented items must be stored in the lockers. All trash must be disposed of in the bear proof trash receptacles. Do not store food, trash or scented items in your vehicle.

There is a $10 entry fee per vehicle at Minaret Vista before entering Red’s Meadow Valley, and interagency passes are accepted. Within the valley, there is a free inter-valley shuttle that runs between Agnew Meadows and Red’s Meadow Resort with stops at a couple of lakes, the Devil’s Postpile, and Rainbow Falls.
With the cost of fuel and the distance, you may want to consider ridesharing. Information will be collected when you register, and then shared so you can self-organize into carpools.
Potable water, vault toilets, picnic benches, fire pits, bear proof food storage and trash receptacles. Showers are nearby at Red’s Meadow Resort.
The campground is located at 8400 feet elevation, so take elevation change precautions if you’re sensitive (drink lots of water, and avoid/limit alcohol on the night before and after arrival). This time of year is also prone to mosquitos, so be prepared with repellents or other deterrents.

As summer in Los Angeles and environs heats up, this is an opportunity to escape to the High Sierra. You‘ll notice stunning vistas along the way. Beautiful alpine flowers, tumbling waterfalls and serene lakes await you. In the evenings, you can watch the sunset wash the peaks with Alpenglow. We will hike up Big Pine Canyon to the Big Pine Lakes basin and establish a bae camp at Sixth lake, from where we will spend days exploring. Since this is a base camp style trip, people can shorten their stay as they see fit.
This trip is limited to 7 hikers plus the leader.
Although not part of the official trip, it is recommended to drive up on 8/14 and camp near the trailhead, Big Pine Creek Campground, to better acclimatize to the altitude of about 8,000 feet and rest up for the hike the next day.
8/15: Hike from the trailhead near the Big Pine Creek Campground to the shores of First Lake; 5 miles & 2350 ft gain. The trail goes up Big Pine Lakes Canyon, which was arved by the glaciers so is narrow and steep sided, passes the historic Lon Chaney cabin and 2 sets of waterfalls. This is likely to be a moderately strenuous day due to the altitude effects, so we will pause at First Lake to allow us to acclimatize.
8/16: Hike from First Lake to Summit Lake; 2.5 miles, 930 ft. gain. This will be our base camp. We will pass along 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Lakes enroute which are milky turquoise in color from the glacial powder carried down from the glacier.
8/17 – 8/19: Various day hikes to explore the Big Pine Lakes basin and the Palisade Glacier. We will have spectacular views of the Glacier and the Palisade Crest which averages 14,000 feet, and is the southernmost glacier in the United States. It is estimated to be about two miles in length and several hundred feet thick. The trip to the glacier tops out at about 13,000 feet.
8/20: Return to the trailhead via Black Lake.
You will need your ten essentials and appropriate backpacking gear. Please request a list if needed. Carpooling is recommended to reduce fuel costs and vehicle emissions.
